Veneers Check! A Misleading TikTok Trend

Here we go again with more powerful trends that get people confused at the max.

You might have seen this phenomenon with the veneers’ teeth shaving Katie Price news awhile ago. She is a former model who booked herself a smile makeover in Turkey.

Supposedly, she went to get veneers and even shared some of the pictures of her prepped “shark teeth,” as some may call it.

This picture could truly make someone panic over the fact that a veneer transformation requires such a modification in the teeth.

She got lots of attention for this, and somehow you could start seeing people showing the same filled down teeth on TikTok.

And, as expected from TikTokers, they turned this into a trend which they called #veneerscheck.

And here is where the misleading begins.

The shaved-down teeth shown in these people’s videos and photos do not accurately represent the actual veneer preparation.

But it does represent the preparation for dental crowns.

Crown Teeth Shaving vs. Veneer Teeth Shaving

What people are showing off so proudly might just be #crownscheck, not veneers.

Both indeed require some tooth shaving, but there are huge differences between both cosmetic treatments that you should know about before considering one or the other:

Dental crowns

Good for: dental crowns are a restorative treatment that protects and revitalizes your teeth. They are often referred to as “caps” since they cover your tooth completely. These are some of the reasons why you might need a dental crown:

  • To fix severe decay
  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Cover a dental implant
  • Protect a tooth after a root canal
  • Restore a worn down or broken tooth

Preparation: to place a dental crown, your dentist will reshape the tooth according to the type of crown you’ll be getting. Types of crowns include gold, metal, porcelain, and zirconia.

The reshaping process consists of the shaving down of the top and sides of the tooth. In the process, your dentist can also get rid of any issues of decay.

Dental veneers

Good for: veneers are more of a cosmetic treatment that helps upgrade your smile beautifully. Patients prefer them to fix chipped teeth, gaps, or misshapen teeth. Instead of caps, veneers are thin covers that attach to the front surfaces of your teeth.

You can choose from two types of veneers:

  • Porcelain veneers
  • Composite resin veneers

Preparation: you should know that veneer teeth shaving is only for porcelain veneers. If you opt for porcelain veneers, then your dentist will have to remove a little bit of your tooth enamel from the front and sides of the tooth.

On the other hand, if you go for composite resin veneers, the dentist will remove even less enamel from your tooth. In some cases, this type of veneer doesn’t even need preparation or shaving.

Does Teeth Shaving Hurt?

When you look at all those pictures, teeth shaving sure looks kind of uncomfortable.

Filling down teeth needs to be done by an expert, and no, it shouldn’t hurt at all.

This procedure can be very beneficial to your smile, depending on your oral needs.

For example, people who have crowded teeth and need braces could also need some tooth reshaping to get extra space and allow their smile to align at the end of the treatment.

Generally, this procedure doesn’t even require anesthesia because the drilling of the tooth is done on the outer layer where there are no nerve endings that can get damage.

Why is This Veneer Teeth Shaving Trend Dangerous?

Apart from the fact that it spreads misconceptions about veneers and dental crowns, it also attracts a large number of young people who might get influenced into following these types of trends.

And after watching the results of those smile transformations, it’s only natural that many want to get these dental procedures for themselves, even if their smile doesn’t need them.

That is a key point. Always keep in mind that dental treatments are precisely that, a treatment. They’re here to solve and heal existing oral issues.

If you get a dental crown for a perfectly healthy tooth, there’s just no going back.

Adult teeth can’t regenerate. You will be significantly reducing its lifespan, which, if you’re young, will cost you more time and money in the future.

You must do your own research about any dental procedures or talk to a professional for guidance.

Can You Get Veneers Without Shaving Your Teeth?

Yes, and it’s included in the many options you have to get dental work in Mexico.

Dental technology keeps getting better and better and has resulted in the creation of veneer alternatives better known as Lumineers and Vivaneers.

The design of these ultra-thin veneers allows a less invasive application. Your dentist won’t have to shave down your teeth. Instead, they can simply place them over your natural teeth.

But, like any other treatment, Lumineers and Vivaneers should satisfy your specific dental needs. If they’re not a good option for your specific case, then your dentist will recommend something else that does.
